What’s something you used to believe as a kid that seems ridiculous now?
Father Christmas, the tooth fairy and fairy tales, all have the magic that makes a childhood, well, magical. And that is exactly what childhood should be. And sometimes, for too many children it is not.
And a childhood with the fantasctical is one worth remembering. I remember Father Christmas and how we all waited in anticipation for the morning of the 25th of December. Excitement bubbly over, and an energy that was infectious. What memories!
Fairytales have had been under scrutiny for what expectations they create in girls. The belief that there is a prince on a white horse waiting to save her from a plethora of uncomfortable situations. Think imprisonment of Rapulzel and the wicked step sisters of Cinderella.
My take in fairytales is that they convey that even bad situations can get better and that tricky things will be solved – albeit by a prince. And there are very few real Princes in the world. But there are very good men that enhance the lives of women all over the world. Men who will treat women as treasures with respect, love, understanding and acceptance. And my fairytale has come true. I have found and married such a man. And so still believe in magic.
