If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?
It is not so much laws I would like to change, it is more minimum sentencing guidelines.
I would like it that convicted rapists and paedophiles are sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole.
I say this, because in my country we have a scourge of violence and abuse against women and children. And the matter is now delaclared a national emergency. But nothing of note has been done to address this issue- from the government’s point of view.
I would suggest that the first thing they could do would be to change the sentencing guidelines to ensure that convicted perpetrators are punished appropriately for destroying the lives of too many women and children.
The second guideline that I would change would be the one that disallowed prisoners to work whilst they are serving their sentence. We have so much infrastructure that needs building. We have a service delivery vacuum – water and lights- that the prisoners could be used to fill the gap in labourers and get the issues sorted out.
Prisoners are not fit for living in society- that is why they have been sentence. For crimes against society in one way or another. They should pay back to society by working to improves the services to society.
